Stuart White, General Manager, Ministry of Justice

The reality is that all leaders are expected to implement change. At the same time, no quarter is given on achievement of key performance indicators (KPIs) and performance measures.

The challenge for leaders during times of change is to innovate while maintaining levels of customer service and production levels. It is a balancing act between implementing new initiatives and maintaining productivity. As if that’s not enough you have to continue developing new business as well. It is difficult to maintain this intricate balancing act when many change initiatives divert immense resource from operational performance. And yet ongoing change is a reality in business today. There will never be a time when the change stops!

Our services enable you to address the changes you need to make while maintaining business performance.

Restructuring

Change does not necessarily involve restructuring. But when it does, we can help you to:

  • Diagnose the situation to work out whether restructuring is a good idea, and what alternatives there are.
  • Identify the issues.
  • Plan the approach.
  • Keep managers, staff and other stakeholders (e.g. Ministers, Board) informed of progress throughout the project.
  • Determine options for organisation design.
  • Identify success criteria and appropriate organisation design principles.
  • Establish the organisation design – determine what structure is needed and integrate with business processes.
  • Involve and synthesise many diverse viewpoints in the design of the change.
  • Develop the change proposal.
  • Undertake formal consultation with staff.
  • Make final decisions.
  • Announce the final decision.
  • Reconfirm / reassign / negotiate with managers and staff about their options.
  • Recruit new staff internally and externally.
  • Induct staff into new roles.
  • Plan and facilitate the implementation – management workshops, staff workshops, implementation checklists, internal communications.
  • Arrange appropriate training programmes.

Setting up new business units, implementing new technology, establishing new ways of working

Business opportunities, legislative change, new technology or sheer survival can trigger the need to establish a new business unit or ways of working. We come into our own in situations that create precedent rather than rely on it. Leading the change, HR and communications in these complex situations is our specialty.

Superb project management and a multi-disciplinary approach are needed to manage the implementation of diverse work streams including accommodation, equipment, specialised software, business processes, and workload analysis. So an excellent project manager is required. Then there is the people side of the change. That’s where we come in. We are used to leading work streams in project environments incorporating change, communication and people (HR) functions within multi-disciplinary teams.

We are aware that not many people can offer this capability. Our facilitative style allows us to develop strong relationships with line managers and internal specialists to keep the project strongly linked to organisational policy while at the same time enabling the innovative approaches that are often required in these projects.

We will challenge the status quo, but in ways that recognise the need for us to continue in relationship together to ensure the success of the project.
